Bring back search synonyms on your Shopify store

Around September 16, 2026, Shopify retired the Synonyms feature in its Search and Discovery app. Its replacement, semantic search, only runs on Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, and never in the predictive search dropdown. Stores on the Basic plan, and every store's dropdown, lost synonym support.

What Synonym Sync does

You tell it which words mean the same thing, for example sofa, couch, settee. It tags every matching product with the other words, using tags that start with _syn-. Shopify search already searches tags, so a customer who types "couch" now finds your sofas in the search page and in the dropdown.

• Works on every Shopify plan.
• Works in the search dropdown, the search page, and headless storefronts.
• Does not rewrite the customer's search, so Shopify's typo tolerance stays on.
• No theme code. New and edited products update automatically.
• Import your old synonym list, one group per line.
